The eternal significance of Hindutva

By M.V. Kamath

In recent times there has been a lot of hue and cry over ‘Hindutva’. Macaulay’s children who inhabit editorial offices in many newspapers have, in the past, taken an instant dislike for the word, often going to the extent to comparing it with fascism. For our intellectuals, the very word ‘Hindu’ is anathema: they recoil from it. To them, to say that one is a Hindu is an admission of communalism.

Jawaharlal Nehru was one who led the great anti-Hindu brigade. He was aghast that KM Munshi should want to resurrect the Somnath Temple that had been desecrated and looted by Ghazni Mohammad not once, but several times. He was even averse to then President Dr Rajendra Prasad attending the inaugural ceremony of the renovated temple, though Nehru had no compunction in asking that his ashes be immersed in Ganga which he described in lyrical terms in his Last Will and Testament. Such was the hatred that the anti-Hindutva forces aroused that the Shiv Sena was moved to ask its followers to assert proudly that they are Hindus. Garv se kaho hum Hindu hai. At least two generations of young Hindus have been brought up in India to shun Hindutva and think of it as a destructive doctrine which it is anything but, the frequent mile-long queue of young Indians wishing to offer their prayers to Siddhi Vinayaka in Mumbai has another story to tell.

What is Hindutva? It means the "essence" of Hinduism. And what is the essence of Hinduism? It can be summed up in one word: "Tolerance". Tolerance of what? Tolerance of contrary views, tolerance of dissent; tolerance of -and respect for -other religions. Yes, Hinduism has a thousand shortcomings which Hindus themselves have sought to correct down the centuries and continue to do so even today. For Mahatma Gandhi Hinduism was "a relentless pursuit to Truth". "If today it has become moribund, inactive and irresponsive to growth" he wrote (and that was in Young India, April 24, 1924) it is because we are fatigued, and as soon as the fatigue is over, Hinduism will burst upon the world with a brilliance perhaps unknown before". Our so-called secularists cannot stand that. They have to damn Hinduism in order to win the approbation and applause of the "minorities".

What is Hinduism’s political record? When the Parsis landed in Gujarat in AD 717 they were given asylum and allowed to live their lives the way they desired. Christianity came to India almost two thousand years ago and survived. They were not hounded out. No Hindu ruler ever invaded foreign lands, determined to destroy other cultures and civilisations. Asoka did not send an Army to China or even to Sri Lanka to spread the message of the Buddha. No Hindu preacher ever went round the world to publicise Hinduism as the only gateway to salvation. No Hindu monarch levied any unjust tax-like jezia-on Muslims. No Hindu sought revenge against the past evil deeds of Muslim rulers. And what has been the record of barbarian invaders?

In his book: The Sword of the Prophet, Serge Trifkovic has noted that "the massacres perpetrated by Muslims in India are unparalleled in history, bigger in sheer numbers than the Holocaust". When Mohammad Qasim invaded India, starting in AD 712, according to Trifkovic, he "demolished temples, shattered sculptures, plundered palaces, killed vast numbers of men-it took his men three days to slaughter the inhabitants of the port city of Debal..." That was only the beginning. It is not necessary to go into all the details of temple destruction, smashing of idols and decimation of Hindus which can only make for painful reading.

After the Battle of Chittor, even Akbar had ordered the slaying of 30,000 Rajputs on February 24, 1568. Hindus have never sought revenge, It is not in their blood. Hindutva is unique in its inclusive nature and the BJP- and every Indian-has every reason to be proud of it. It allows every individual to follow his own self-chosen path to salvation. No Hindu leader dare issue a fatwa. No Hindu religious authority can lay down what is right or wrong, whether it is birth control, divorce or whatever. The essence of Hinduism is total, utter freedom. If that is not something to be proud of, what is? Are we to be governed by people who are not proud of their own past, in the name of secularism? What a fantastically rich past do we Hindus have which we want to share with our fellow Indians? Whether it is in the realm of science, technology, astronomy, literature, philosophy and the arts, it is we, the Hindus, who have ample reason to be proud of. If that is not something to be proud of, what is? And we achieved all this without robbing other nations and people as did the British, the French and other barbarian European societies.

Hindus did not send missionaries to Portugal or Spain to burn down Churches and impose Hinduism on the people on pain of death, if they didn’t . Hindus respected tribals as is explicit in the story of Hanuman. They did not decimate them as did the Americans and Australians and Spaniards in North and South America and in Australia. Hindus excelled in mathematics, physics, chemistry, metallurgy, metereology and much else and to Hindus dharma meant upholding values, not devastating conquered lands. And what a great past do we have!

Macaulay himself, addressing the British Parliament on February 2, 1835 said: "I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such calibre that I do not think we would ever conquer this country unless we break the backbone of this nation which is her spiritual and cultural heritage" (emphasis added). Macaulay’s children today are doing just that, damning Hindutva. Hindutva is not anti-Muslim or anti-Christian or anti-Modern. Hindutva is post-modern in the freedom it gives to those Hindus such as the ones who have taken over Silicon Valley in the United States. Hindutva is a value-based and value-enriching way of life and there is nothing comparable to it in the world. To run it down is exactly what Macaulay would have appreciated and that is exactly what our secularists are upto. There is no such thing as ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ Hindutva. To own up to Hindutva is to regain our self-respect as a people and as a nation. That should be the motto of the BJP.

Establishing Hindutva is to establish a knowledge society whose motto is sarve janaha sukhino bhavantu. BJP should feel proud of Hindutva as a noble aim to be pursued and not succumb to the pseudo-Hindutvawadis who want BJP to be the B Teams of the Congress. There is nothing in the world to beat Hindutva in its sheer catholicity. Hindutva is above all religious: it is the greatest liberating force in the world of which all Indians can be truly proud of. Young India should be informed of it. They are not anti-Hindutva as many of our Macaulay’s sons want to believe and seek to impress on BJP leadership. They need to be marginalised.

Why India needs the BJP

Tarun Vijay

The ideology that the Bharatiya Janata Party represents and its pan Indian appeal makes it an important cog in our democracy, argues Tarun Vijay
In a nation where most of the political parties are known by the names of their 'owners' turning the political process into a kind of family fiefdom, the existence of a party that still runs on democratic norms and represents a completely different ethos, must be valued as a need of the society. That is the Bharatiya Janata Party. It is useless to indulge in the contemporary dichotomies and scuffles that mar its current framework.

These are trivialities and have been a part of every political party, including the Jan Sangh that saw much bitter scenes involving top guns even when that was hardly as strong as its new avatar the BJP has become.

The basic question is -- do we have a future for a party that symbolises Hindu aspirations and civilisational rejuvenation through political instruments and acts as a part of a larger saffron brotherhood that has grown stronger by each year since its emergence in 1925?

Suppose if there was no Jan Sangh or the BJP there would have been no Kashmir movement, no demands to scrap two flags and two constitutional provisions for an Indian state and abolishing two Constitutional heads system for it. Who would have taken up the cause of an invincible Indian security and carried out the Pokaran II nuclear tests while preparing for Pokaran III?

The last millennium saw the foreign attacks on Bharat that is India and the target of these barbaric assaults were essentially the Hindu population and their temples. The truncated independence should have given them the highest freedom to flower and come to their own as a free and fearless nation would have honoured the great spirit of resistance that made Allama Iqbal write 'Kuch baat hai ki hasti mit-ti nahin hamaari (There is something extraordinary that we -- the civilisation -- survived centuries of assaults)'.

But after the massacres during Partition/independence in Calcutta, Noakhali, Muzaffarabad and Rawalpindi, Hindus got the secular marginalisation and a State apparatus that looked down at anything representing their age old-bruised ethos. That is why to uphold the dignity of being a Hindu and ensure equal attitude of the State for every citizen without any discrimination on the basis of caste or religion, the Jan Sangh was founded in 1951. The principles were unity in diversity, one nation, one culture and one people and justice to all, appeasement of none.

At the first all India session of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh, its founder president Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee had said, 'India has been for centuries past the homeland of diverse people pursuing different faiths and religions. The need to preserve and respect the personal laws of such people especially in matters of religion and fundamental social obligations is undoubted. In all matters concerning the rights and duties of citizenship as such, there must be complete equality for all. We must be able to carry all sections of the people with us by creating in their minds a healthy and progressive attitude of co-operation based on true equality of opportunity and mutual tolerance and understanding. Our party's door remains open to all who believe in our programme and ideology irrespective of considerations of caste and religion.'

'Our party,' he added, 'believes that the future progress of India must be based on a natural synthesis between its full economic advance and the development of mind and character of the people in accordance with the highest traditions of Indian culture and civilization. The political freedom that we have achieved will be meaningless without economic freedom. It is a tragedy that a vast country such as India, with its almost limitless resources and raw materials, should be steeped in poverty, disease, ignorance and degradation. Our party believes that without plunging the country into the vortex of violent chaos and conflict, it should be possible for us to readjust the conditions of our economic life so as to bring to an end a shameful era of exploitation and silent human suffering.'

Without mincing any words he declared, 'Our party though, ever prepared to extend its hand of equality to all citizens, does not feel ashamed to urge for the consolidation of Hindu society, nor does it suffer from an inferiority complex to acknowledge proudly that the great edifice of Indian culture and civilization, which had stood the test of thousands of years, has been built, most of all by the labour, sacrifice and wisdom of Hindu sages, savants and patriots throughout the chequered history of our motherland. We are not so mean as to forget that in this gigantic process our country came into contact and conflict with many foreign races and ideologies and our great ancestors had the courage to fashion and refashion the country's structure in accordance with new ideas and with the changed conditions of our society. If India's freedom is to be purposeful, a correct appreciation of the fundamental features of Indian culture -- the discovery of that unity in diversity, which is the keynote of her civilization -- is highly essential.'

These lengthy quotations are essential to understand the real purpose behind the BJP, which has accepted Dr Mookerjee and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya as its sources of inspiration showing the ideological path.

In pre-Partition days, the independence movement essentially drew from Hindu nationalist symbols and writings expressed through Mahatma Gandhi's Ram Rajya, Sri Aurobindo's Bhawani Bharati concept which saw India as Durga incarnate and declared Sanatan Dharma as the nationality of India, Vivekananda, Lokmanya Tilak, and Subhas Bose. They were all deeply Hindu spiritual personalities who espoused the cause of freedom, liberty, equality and democracy.

There was less ideological apartheid that we see today and newspapers like The Hindu and The Hindustan Times were not looked down just because they bore a word Hindu and parties like the Hindu Mahasabha, Ram Rajya Parishad etc were in the mainstream without experiencing any kind of 'ideological untouchability'.

It's only after Independence under the influence of Nehruvian left-to-centre policies that the assertive Hindus segment was sought to be humiliated and segregated.

In the contemporary political scene, the Congress, which once represented the federal liberal character of Hindu nationalist ideas advocating equality to all, has turned into a family oriented party where internal democratic process is completely subjugated to the wishes and whims of a supreme leader who also happens to be a family head. Except for the Communist parties and the BJP there is a hardly a party that is democratically run and controlled from the grassroot levels.

Hence, in spite of internal bickering and trivial issues cropping up, a party that was born post Independence representing a distinct ideology and programmes can only be a strengthening factor for democracy. Its amazing growth and power to rule the nation quite successfully have further added to its credibility. Those who oppose it must look at the fact sheet it has so far built -- giving India the best of the highways, an IT and technological revolution, best run states in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh [ Images ] and Chhattisgarh and above all a credible opposition that has a vast acceptability at an all India level, giving a pan India character to the polity.

The poet who wrote, 'Gagan mein laharta hai bhagwa hamara (The saffron flies high in the sky)' became the most admired prime minister, the first genuinely non-Congress one and his regime saw the best of relations with neighbours. Atal Bihari Vajpayee [ Images ] allowed Pokaran II, yet maintained better ties with the US, China and Pakistan without compromising on national interest.

This party has another distinct feature -- it can boast of a galaxy of national leaders who command a mass following unlike others who have none but their 'eternally elected' chiefs alone for the posters and platforms diminishing any second or third rank leadership.

And you don't have to belong to a family or a family's durbar to aspire for higher goals and posts in the party. Someone who was a village level worker and did his bit to gain acceptance could become party president and was never told, oh you don't have a particular last name hence can rise this far and no further.

Pardon me if in this context, to clarify a bit more, I recall a Q&A session I had in China where I was asked in a university by students – 'What's the use of your democracy if it can't deliver? See Bihar and Orissa and UP's rural areas and farmers suicides? We may not be having the democracy you like to ape from the West but our one party system is delivering fine.'

I was not surprised. The value of democracy can be understood only when you lose it after enjoying its fruits. I simply said, even with half filled stomachs and often self defeating noises, we prefer freedom more than a totalitarian regime guaranteeing prosperity to all.

Liberty can have no alternative. And that's exactly the most powerful factor that makes the BJP indefatigable and invincible. The party's inner core promises to rise like a Phoenix if the outer shell fails to translate the ideals it was born to achieve.

It may look a bit preposterous to say these high pedestal things when the party is making news not for some happy reasons. It is sad, but it will pass. The party is not built by those who were adherents of a family, but by those small yet strongly committed young hearts who built it on their shoulders because they shared a vision and a dream.

I have seen three generations working together, first for the Jan Sangh and then for its new avatar, the BJP. They never aspired to make it big in Delhi but from Silchar to Shimoga and Doda to Port Blair, they have been working. These workers are the strength of the party and not those who make big speeches and then wash dirty linen in the media. They must be powered and their moral needs to be boosted by a united commitment to principles leaders claim they accept.

Today these workers have emerged taller because they have lived the ideals espoused by Deen Dayal Upadhyaya who had merged his identity with the common cadre and lived by his principles through his own life's example. He gave the alternative ideology of integral humanism before the two alien ones namely capitalism and communism. That almost supplements and complements Gandhi's Hind Swarajya whose hundredth year is passing so unceremoniously in the raj of the 'Gandhis'.

It is this perfectly ideological rock of our civilisation represented by the BJP in politics that India needs fervently.

Jinnah Virus Distracts and Debilitates BJP

By R.K. Ohri, IPS (Retd)

For a second time during the last four years Jinnah virus has struck the Bharatiya Janata Party. Greatly impressed by the success of Mohammed Ali Jinnah in carving out the Islamic State of Pakistan by ensuring division of India, almost single-handedly, some BJP leaders are bending backwards in praising Jinnah as a great ‘secular’ leader. Overwhelmed by ‘Jinnah virus’ and trying to outdo his senior colleague, L K Advani, in his latest book Jaswant Singh (a prominent BJP leader and former Foreign Affairs Minister in NDA government), has showered encomiums on Jinnah, while criticizing the murky role of Nehru and Gandhi in accepting partition of the country as a fait accompli. While this belated claim to wisdom by Jaswant Singh about greatness of the founder of Pakistan further bewildered the average middle class Hindu, the BJP was left with no option but to expel Jaswant Singh from the party due to his deliberate deviation from the ideology of BJP.

In June 2005 the then President of BJP, L.K. Advani, had praised Mohammed Ali Jinnah, as a secular leader during his visit to Pakistan, without verifying the facts. That controversial statement bestowing the halo of a “secular leader” on Jinnah was greatly resented by the Hindu masses. Ultimately it led to large scale criticism of Advani’s wrong perception and he had to step down from the office of BJP President.

Advani’s misadventure about Jinnah’s secular status was based on Pakistan’s Qaid-e Azam’s address to the Constituent Assembly on August 11, 1947, in which he had declared that “you are free to go to your mosques, or any other place of worship …… you may belong to any religion, caste or creed, that has nothing to do with the business of the state. You will find that in the course of time Hindus will cease to be Hindus and Muslims will cease to be Muslims, not in the religious sense ….. but in the political sense as citizens of the State”.

Apparently that statement was enough to make Advani conclude that Jinnah was indeed a secular democrat. The veteran leader did not care to check up the reasons which could have prompted Jinnah to make that most-unlike-Jinnah statement in the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan on August 11, 1947. Perhaps he relied too much on the advice and assessment of his aide, Sudheendra Kulkarni, yet another admirer of Jinnah, who had accompanied him. Advani just could not figure out that what Jinnah had pronounced on August 11, 1947, was nothing but mere posturing done on the advice of Lord Ismay who was the Chief of Staff of the then Governor General of India, Lord Mountbatten.

The inside story of Jinnah’s August 11, 1947, statement has been narrated by a distinguished Punjabi scholar, Dr. Kripal Singh, on page 740 of his book, Select Documents on Partition of India -1947 (India and Pakistan), published in 1990. As revealed by Dr. Kripal Singh, the advice to make such a statement was given by Lord Ismay to Jinnah, under specific instructions of Lord Mountbatten in order to douse the raging fire of communal violence across Pakistan at that time. It was a belated attempt to assure the Hindus and the Sikhs living in Pakistan about their safety, expressly made on the suggestion of Lord Mountbatten, the then Governor General of India. The sole aim of the August 11, 1947, statement was to check the spiralling communal violence in Pakistan which had already generated a violent reaction in East Punjab (India).

The fact that Jinnah had been prevailed upon to make such a statement was told to Dr. Kripal Singh by Lord Ismay himself. His aforesaid book contains interviews with Lord Attlee, the Prime Minister of U.K. in 1947, Sir Francis Mudie, the then Governor of Punjab and Sir Cyril Radcliffe, Chairman of the Boundary Commission who drew the final lines of the partitioned sub-continent. In an exclusive interview to TNS (Tribune News Service) Dr. Kripal Singh had disclosed that he had interviewed Lord Ismay on August 17, 1964, at his residence in U.K. Dr. Kripal Singh is a former Head of the Department of Historical Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala, and an euridite scholar and author of several books.

Every Indian, except perhaps Jaswant Singh, knows that Jinnah had repeatedly said that the Hindus and the Muslims cannot live together in India and had pompously declared in August 1946, “We shall have India divided or we shall have India destroyed”. He was a fundamentalist who was squarely responsible for organizing the great Calcutta killings on August 16, 1947, by giving a call for Direct Action to achieve the goal of Pakistan. Apparently the fast ageing BJP leaders like Jaswant Singh and Advani have forgotten that on July 27, 1946, while giving a call to Muslims for observing August 16, 1946, as Direct Action Day for achieving the goal of Pakistan, Jinnah spoke thus :

“The Muslims of India would not rest contented with anything less than the immediate establishment of independent and fully sovereign State of Pakistan. .. Now the time has come for the Muslim Nation to resort to Direct Action. We have taken a most historic decision. Never before in the whole history of the Muslim League did we do anything except by constitutional methods. Today we have said good-bye to constitutional methods. Throughout the painful negotiations the two parties with whom we bargain held a pistol at us - one with power and machine-guns behind it and the other with non-cooperation and the threat to launch mass civil disobedience. The situation must be met. We also have a pistol”.

That open declaration to defy the law had prompted Muslim League’s Mayor of Calcutta, Mohammed Usman, to give a call for jihad on August 16, 1946, by issuing an inflammatory leaflet titled “Munajat for Jihad”. On the Direct Action Day the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata) went through a grisly bloodbath which continued for several days a brief account of which has been given by Justice G.D. Khosla in his famous narrative, ‘The Stern Reckoning’. The total number of innocent citizens killed during the jihad unleashed by Muslim League on the Direct Action Day was estimated to be between 5,000 and 10,000. Subseqeuntly communal riots broke out in many parts of the country.

Thus Jinnah was never never ’secular’ in his outlook, much less in deed. Both Advani and Jaswant Singh appear to be suffering from age-related amnesia. How else could they forget that barely 10 weeks after Jinnah’s statement of August 11, 1946, Pakistan had invaded Jammu & Kashmir and let loose a horrendous campaign of murder, rape and pillage against unsuspecting hapless people? At that time Jinnah was very much alive (he died only in September 1948) and no one can deny that the Kashmir invasion was launched with his approval as Governor General of Pakistan.

Apparently the two BJP leaders never ever cared to ascertain the truth behind Jinnah’s deceptive statement made in Pakistan’s Constituent Assembly on 11th August 1947. What made Jinnah issue the so-called “secular statement” on August 11, 1947, has been clarified by Dr. Kripal Singh, as stated above. In essence that statement of Jinnah was nothing but recourse to ‘Taqiyah’, a convenient Islamic tool for befooling the so-called ‘kaffirs’.

Going far beyond what Advani had stated in June 2005, in a TV interview Jaswant Singh claimed that the widespread opinion in India that Jinnah was anti-Hindu was mistaken, and that he was unfairly demonized. The tall leader failed to explain why Jinnah did not try to prevent the massive ethnic cleansing of Hindus from Pakistan, why did he not raise even a small finger to save the lives and properties of lakhs of Hindus trapped in Pakistan?

Giving further twist to his love for Jinnah, during a TV interview by Karan Thapar, Jaswant Singh bemoaned, “Look into the eyes of the Muslims who live in India and if you truly see their pain with which they live, to which land do they belong? We treat them as aliens ….. without doubt Muslims have paid the price of partition”. It is difficult, nay impossible, to comprehend why Jaswant Singh does not realize that the real price of partition was paid by crores of Hindus and Sikhs who were killed, converted and driven out from Pakistan and Bangladesh (formerly known as East Pakistan). How can he be so insensitive to the ethnic cleansing of Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan, Bangladesh and even from Kashmir, an important part of our bogus secular political dispensation?

Surely Jaswant Singh cannot be oblivious of the fact Hindu population in Pakistan has come down from 23% in 1947 to less than 2% now, and in Bangladesh it has dwindled from 27% in 1947 to a meager 8%. And in Kashmir valley there are hardly any Hindus left now, except government servants ! Yet Jaswant Singh’s heart bleeds only for Muslims - nary a tear did he shed for millions of ethnically Hindus and Sikhs. What hypocrisy, what poor scholarship ?

It is extraordinary that Jaswant Singh does not know that in four globally recognized human development indices, namely, the Infant Mortality, Child Mortality, Degree of Urbanisation and Life Expectancy at Birth the Muslims of India are better placed than the Hindus, and that according to a survey conducted in 2005 by the Centre for Studies of Developing Studies, New Delhi, at the all India level the proportion of “very poor” people is higher among Hindus than among Muslims.

The untruthful book of Jaswant Singh and his interviews to the media are indeed classic examples of poor scholarship. No wonder, Jaswant Singh has been expelled from the BJP. The lesson is that book writing is a serious academic pursuit. It should not be taken as a casual exercise, even by the tallest politicians.

No human rights for Hindus abroad?

Dr Pravin Togadia

“Government has not sent Indian students to Australia or to Canada or to UK; they went there themselves by their own choice. Anyway, there are many Indians in many countries and the Government is NOT responsible for whatever happens to them there every time.” You thought that was a comment by an Australian Government’s representative? NO. This is a comment on the TV Channels by a State Minister of External Affairs, Government of India. He also happened to have enjoyed a high level global diplomatic position before and after losing the highest level election there, suddenly remembered Indian roots and contested on a ruling party’s ticket. It is not important what any person has been before he / she joins the government as minister or how many fancy haircuts he has had or how many coffee table books he has written; it is significant as to WHAT VIEWS and VALUES, he/she carries as India’s Minister about things that happen to and hurt India and Indians anywhere.

The point is that from Malaysia to Indonesia, from Canada to UK, from US to Australia, from Bhutan to Nepal and from Sri Lanka to Pakistan… and many other countries, Indians are being beaten up, man handled, killed, taken hostage, looted, discriminated with and what not. Twenty-seven attacks on Indian students in Australia were reported in Indian media, India was shocked and then realised to her utter pain that this number was just an iceberg. There have been more than 600 such attacks in past 3 years on Indians in Australia and by the locals there- it does not matter whether the attackers were native Australians or sheltered Lebanese. The attacks on Indians happened on the Australian soil and therefore the Australian Government must protect the Indian students and professionals there- not because Australia earns millions out of them, but because Australia claims to be secular.

As much as Australia, even the Indian Government is to blame for continuous racist attacks of such heinous types on Indians in many countries – sometimes even with the obvious goal of Ethnic Cleansing as in Malaysia, Sri Lanka etc. The comment given in the beginning is not just mere words; it shows the apathy of those sitting in the government towards well-being of millions of Indians staying, studying, working abroad. Strangely, even in this inbuilt apathy, Indian Government seems to be showing extra love & choice for certain religions when it comes to helping an Indian in trouble abroad. India has yet not forgotten Indian PM’s tears for Haneef after seeing his pregnant wife speaking to media.

Haneef was arrested on the charges of terrorism. Whether they were true or false, the haste PM showed to send top lawyers’ team to help him. There was quite shocking on the background the great apathy and indifference shown to Mr. Kutty who was abducted by Talibans in Afghanistan or even the disgusting level of indifference shown to the horrible plight of Indian students in Australia as barring 1 or 2, the people who were hurt were either Hindus or Sikhs. We have to blame Australia for their show-case secularism but what about Indian Government’s Selective Secularism?

It is not that our government’s apathy and indifference are recent . For the last many decades Hindus in Sri Lanka have been struggling to stay alive there. What has been happening to them is nothing less than Ethnic Cleansing and state sponsored terrorism. From suppressing the true figures of the dead in the blanket bombarding on Hindu civilians to preventing food & medicines from reaching the ill, hurt Hindus even recently, Sri Lanka could do all such brutality in broad day light only due to various Indian Governments’ apathy. About 400,000+ Hindus displaced, at least 1/8 of it have been massacred, children and young women abducted, old and ill suffering.

In Bhutan over 150,000 Hindus suffered brutal Ethnic Violence in the hands of state sponsored terrorists. Those Hindus ran away to Nepal where they were again harassed. Now The United Nations has been shifting them to other countries like Canada etc – disturbing their livelihood and making them forfeit their ancestral properties in Bhutan and on the condition that they convert. No. Indian Government will not move a finger on this as their names are NOT Haneef, Naushad etc. They are Shyam, Ram, Mohan, Arjun….

Same thing happened in Malaysia. Not just breaking ancient Hindu temples, but officially Muslim Malaysian Government have been killing, displacing Hindus there. They try to defend themselves without any help from Indian Government. Organisations like VHP or many other may have will to help but without political will, no organisation gets teeth. Hindus in Malaysia are not migrants; they are natives there. They have ancient temples, lands, properties, farms, businesses there dating even before the official religion of Malaysia was even born! But now they are being chased out same as it happened to Kashmiri Hindus in our own country. Same is happening in Indonesia, Kenya and where not!

This is not a complaint; this is an appeal from the bottom of a Hindu heart to all well-meaning Hindus all over the globe to wake up and get Indian Government woken up to the bitter and horrifying fact that if it continues like this, there will be many more Barak Hussein Obamas who would hate Indians not just for their intellect and hard work, but who may even resort to state sponsored terrorism against Hindus in many countries after using them to get those nations’ businesses networked and flourished.

If there is any Hindu suicide as it has been happening recently in the US, UK, Canada or if there is any more Hindu battering in Australia or in Malaysia or in Sri Lanka, it is the full responsibility of Indian Government. Mass exodus of Indians from many countries will start any moment – which has already started from Sri Lanka, from US, from UK… - THEN IT ALSO HURTS EVERY INDIAN BACK HOME. EVERY INDIAN GETS TEARS IN HIS EYES BY SEEING HINDU PLIGHT IN MANY OF THESE COUNTRIES. So, at least the Indian PM should realise that the democratic price for every Hindu Tear is quite high to pay. Those who speak of Human Rights and shout in Indian and western ‘Genocide Genocide’ when even one Haneef type’s wife is seen crying on TV, must sit up as Hindus KNOW that they have to get not only their BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS but also THEIR FIRST RIGHT ON THE RESOURCES OF THEIR COUNTRY AND THE EQUAL RIGHT ON THE RESOURCES THEY CREATE IN ANY COUNTRY.

Hindu Organisations try their best to reduce suffering of most Hindus impacted by such ethnic violence, racist brutality and socio-political discrimination. But the damage is vast, time is short & resourceful hands are limited. It is time for Hindus to RE-GROUP, RE-NETWORK and RE-SURGE to stand up democratically against any justice.

Forked Tongues of Our "Secular" Edit Writers

LETTER TO INDIAN EXPRESS

Dear Sir,

Reference your edit " Independence in Academia" - (TNIE - 21 AUG).

In your usual "Nehruvian secular" style you wax eloquent on a Muslim girl being prevented from wearing the burqa while attending college. That wearing the burqa is an "Islamic statement" is well known, except probably to the Indian seculars!!

Islamic scriptures, especially the Hadits state this explicitly. If only your edit writers widened their knowledge and read Ibn Warraq's " Why I am not a Muslim " , probably - - - -!!

For the record, to cite just one example, among a host of others. Dr. Kalim Siddiqui, the founding President of the British Muslim Parliament, speaking at the Sixth Conference of European Muslims on 18-19 April 1992 said: " When we walk down in the street, we are just a face in the crowd. But when a woman wears a 'HIJAB', she is carrying the flag of Islam. She is making a statement: that this European civilization is unacceptable to us, that it is a disease, a pestilence on mankind."

In the Indian context, for 'European Civilization', Read: "Sanatana Dharma". Am I off the mark Sir?

But I digress. In a hard hitting Article in a popular website, Dr.Hilda Raja, a Christian and a former professor at the Stella Maris College, Chennai, entitled: "Bible classes and
the right to freedom" , wrote: " When Hindu students are compelled to attend Bible classes,it is coercion and force: It means denying them their right to FREEDOM. This has to stop: the compulsory Bible classes for Hindu students. It has been quietly going on in every Christian school. In Tamil Nadu, I am aware that in schools run by the minorities, it is again the same story - all have to attend daily Christian prayers. They are even taken to the nearby church for prayers. When the school celebrates Mass on feast days all children have to attend. The schools are government-aided and I do not see why this is allowed. On the other hand, Hindu private institutions cannot compel children to attend Hindu instructions. This has been allowed to go on unquestioned for too long."

Continuing, she wrote: " Today with communalism based on creed invading every aspect of people’s lives, Christian schools, evangelists, both missionary and career ones, are geared up with their crusading propaganda. The political scenario is best suited to their insidious designs. Being a Christian/Muslim is being secular; anything associated with Christian and Muslim teachings and propaganda means the spread of secularism. Anything associated with Hindu religion and its religious teachings becomes communal-Hindutva. Hence madrasas are being financed by taxpayer money, and that is secularism. Minority education institutions are aided - full salaries of staff and their pensions are State financed."

And then, she writes - SACRILEGE IN SECULAR EYES!! :

" Here in Gujarat, my grandchildren are attending a school, Nalanda, wherein an Indian ethos is well maintained, be it in its curriculum, co-curriculum and extra-curriculum activities. No religious instruction is being imparted, but the school environ speaks. Such schools must be opened are in high demand because of their efficiency and dedication to learning."

Pura Desh Nehru, Gandhi ke naam ! Over 450 Schemes named after Nehru, Gandhi

A "short" list of schemes, roads etc. for Nehru-Gandhi dynasty promotion with Tax Payers money!

Following is the list of Government schemes and projects; universities and educational institutions; ports and airports; National parks and sanctuaries; sports tournaments, trophies and stadia; hospitals and medical institutions; national scientific and research institutions; University chairs, scholarships and fellowships; festivals; roads and buildings named after three members of the Nehru Gandhi family, Rajiv Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, which has been submitted to the Election Commission . This list includes most of the projects, schemes and institutions funded by the Union Government and the Governments in the States.

In a planned and systematic effort to gain unfair advantage over other political parties, the Congress party has named all major Government programmes, projects and institutions in the country after three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family - Rajiv Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru - who are its icons, and disturbed the level playing field in the electoral arena.

Over the last 18 years, on a rough estimate, about 450 Central and State Government programmes, projects and national and State-level institutions involving public expenditure of hundreds of thousands of crores of rupees have been named after these three individuals.

Jinnah. He had a pistol. He used it.

Tarun Vijay

"I am not prepared to discuss ethics. We have a pistol and are in a position to use it." So said Mohammad Ali Jinnah while delivering his presidential speech at the Muslim League convention on July 19, 1946.

What followed was an unimaginable massacre of Hindus in Kolkata on August 16, 1946. Six thousand killed, twenty thousand raped and maimed.

Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the then leader of Hindu Mahasabha had said, "Jinnah is out to destroy the very soul of India."

If one single instance should be cited to understand what Jinnah really was, it would not be his speech in the Constituent Assembly, Karachi, often quoted by Indian Hindus, but his call for "Direct Action".

That was August 16, 1946, known as the day of "great Calcutta killings". After the "Direct Action" resolution was passed by the Muslim League on July 19, 1946, its president, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, said in his valedictory speech: "What we have done today is the most historic act in our history. Never have we in the whole history of the League done anything except by the constitutional methods and by constitutionalism. But now we are obliged and forced into this position. This day we bid goodbye to constitutional methods…. Now the time has come for the Muslim Nation to resort to direct action. I am not prepared to discuss ethics. We have a pistol and are in a position to use it."

Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the then leader of the Hindu Mahasabha, who had said, "Jinnah is out to destroy the very soul of India", organized Hindus fearlessly and foiled Jinnah’s plan to oust Hindus from Kolkata. He formed a volunteer group of the Hindus named the Hindusthan National Guards, resisted horrendous goondaism of the League and moved in the riot-affected areas giving courage to the victims of a planned slaughter and orgy of violence by the League’s marauders.

Syama Prasad Mookerjee was traveling all over India awakening the masses to rise against the partition plot. On October 8, 1944, at a United Provinces Hindu Conference, he said, "The sooner Mr Jinnah understands that Pakistan in any form or shape will be resisted by Hindus and many others with the last drop of blood, the better for him, for he will then quietly descend on realities and himself plead for a just and equitable settlement. None but an agent of imperialism will so block the path of Indian unity and freedom as Mr Jinnah is doing."

Dr Mookerjee, who is respected as the ideological icon and source of inspiration by the Bharatiya Janata Party, was a devotee of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. In fact, he had been in close contact with Sri Aurobindo, who had said, "The idea of two nationalities in India is only a new-fangled notion invented by Jinnah for his purposes and contrary to the facts. More than 90% of the Indian Mussalmans are descendants of converted Hindus and belong as much to the Indian nation as the Hindus themselves. This process of conversion has continued all along; Jinnah is himself a descendant of a Hindu, converted in fairly recent times, named Jinabhai and many of the most famous Mahommedan leaders have a similar origin."(SABCL, vol.26, page 46).

It was Dr Mookerjee who stood firm and tried to organize a people's movement against partition. He said: “Hindus regard this country as their sacred and holy land. Irrespective of provincial barriers or the diversity in faiths and languages there exists a remarkable economic and cultural unity and inter-dependence which cannot be destroyed at the will of persons and parties who think it beneath their dignity to regard India as their motherland. We must live and die for India and her liberty.” (24th December 1944).

He disagreed with Gandhi placating the Muslim demands and said,"As soon as the other communities realize that the Hindus of India are united and have pledged themselves to stand together for the attainment of their ideal and have adopted a policy of understanding and tolerance to all classes of people residing in India, other communities whose support we are seeking in vain today will then join us voluntarily and on terms honourable to all.”(“Awake Hindusthan”, Page 12).

He further said: “Our experiences in recent years have proved that much as we would be willing to surrender the rights and interests of the Hindus for the purpose of placating other communities, much as we would like to pursue the policy of delivering “blank cheques” the response from the other side is slow and halting, if not sometimes hostile in character.("Awake Hindusthan", Page 13)

In this context, I would like to add that however different Jinnah might have been , we just can't belittle Nehru before Jinnah. Nehru belonged to us; he fought for India’s freedom, spent years in jail and had an Indian dream. We may have a thousand differences with him on policies and programmes, but so what? That would be our "domestic matter". Jinnah led our motherland’s vivisection and he never fought for the freedom struggle.

MJ Akbar has written these lines describing his persona,"Muhammad Ali Jinnah, aristocrat by temperament, catholic in taste, sectarian in politics, and the father of Pakistan, was the unlikeliest parent that an Islamic republic could possibly have. He was the most British of the generation of Indians that won freedom in August 1947. As a child in the elite Christian Mission High School in Karachi, he changed his birthday from 20 October to Christmas Day. As a student at Lincoln's Inn, he anglicised his name from Jinnahbhai to Jinnah. For three years, between 1930 and 1933, he went into voluntary exile in Hampstead, acquired a British passport, set up residence with his sister Fatimah and daughter Dina, hired a British chauffeur (Bradley) for his Bentley, kept two dogs (a black Dobermann and a white West Highland terrier), indulged himself at the theatre (he had once wanted to be a professional actor so that he could play Hamlet) and appeared before the Privy Council to maintain himself in the style to which he was accustomed. He wore Savile Row suits, heavily starched shirts and two-tone leather or suede shoes……Despite being the Quaid-e-Azam, or the Great Leader of Muslims, he drank a moderate amount of alcohol and was embarrassingly unfamiliar with Islamic methods of prayer. He was uncomfortable in any language but English, and made his demand for Pakistan — in 1940 at Lahore — in English, despite catcalls from an audience that wanted to hear Urdu.”

That was a bit of Syama Prasad and the related reflections that may prove worthwhile in the present political debate enveloping the nationalist school of politics. At the end of it, what the Gita has said and the RSS teaches us must make the final lines to this blogpost:

It’s better to die unwavering even in tatters than to change track midway and die stinking rich.

That’s Dharma.

Krishna said: "Swadharme nidhano shreyo (to live and die in ones’ own path alone is the life worthwhile and adopting the ‘other’ dharma is horrible)".

For small desires we lose a lifetime’s achievements and glory.

History was never made essentially by those who became state heads, but often by those who didn’t.

Or by those who gave up everything for others’ good, honestly. Syama Prasad and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya are two major icons of faith for the Hindu nationalist parivar. Both created history and died in their early fifties. Both were mysteriously ‘murdered’. Their lives must light the path of those who care to follow swadharma.

That’s BJP’s legacy too. As it is of other ideologically committed organisations of the saffron hue.

Lincoln didn’t shy away from the civil war and stood like a rock on the question of American spirit and unity. So was Syama Prasad. He died but didn’t bend.

If Jinnah was secular, why did Advani come to India: Thackeray

Flaying BJP leaders for heaping praise on Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Tuesday said calling the Pakistan founder secular was an insult to all those who shed their blood for India's independence.

"(L K) Advani created an ideological confusion by lauding Jinnah. Jaswant Singh has added to it," Thackeray said in an editorial in Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana.'

"It is due to this ideological confusion that the Hindus became frustrated and directionless and the impact was seen in Lok Sabha elections," he said.

"How can a person who demanded a separate state for Muslims be termed secular?" the Sena chief asked and added that "calling Jinnah secular is an insult of all those who shed their blood for India's independence".

"If Jinnah was secular, then why did Advani leave Sindh Province in Pakistan and come to India?" he asked.

What Muslim Leaders have said

Rashtriya Chetna

Abul Kalam Azad : Abul Kalam Azad, while addressing his students, said “A country like India, which has once been under Mohammedan rule, must never be given up, and it was incumbent on them to strive to regain their lost contol.”

On another occassion, Maulana Azad, who held the responsible position of the president of All India Congress, burst out venomously in an irresponsible manner: “Against the non-Muslim Government, Islam prescribes only sword, protracted battle and the cutting of throats.”

Liaqat Ali Khan : Liaqat Ali Khan was the secretary of the Muslim League. He was the right hand of Jinnah. It was Liaqat Ali, who, during the election campaign in 1946, boasted in Delhi. “The Muslim is a born fighter. He may hesitate to cast a vote for Pakistan, but he would not hesitate to shed his blood.” After the partition, he became the first prime minister of Pakistan. Nature is too strict and stern to spare anybody. Liaqat Ali, who got Pakistan through artifical riots, did not die a natural death. He was assassinated.

H.S. Suhrawardy : Hassan Shahid Suhrawardy was political disciple of Jinnah. He is notoriously known in history as the great killer of Hindus in the Calcutta massacre. While addressing the Muslim League Legislators’ Convention held in Delhi on April 9, 1946, Suhrawardy declared like Hitler that Pakistan was the Muslims’ latest, but not the last demand, and that if the British rulers entrusted the destiny of India to the Congress, the Muslim League would not allow the Central Government to function even for a day. On another occasion he, in his capacity as chief minister of Bengal, threatened: “If the Congress was entrusted with power at the Centre, I would declare Bengal independent.”

Feroz Khan Noon : Feroz Khan Noon, a fanatic leader of the Muslim League, while addressing the Muslim League legislators’ meeting, said: “The havoc, that the Muslims would play, would put to shame what Changez Khan and Halaku did.”

Ghaznafar Ali Khan : Ghaznafar Ali Khan, who was the health minister in the Viceroy’s Interim Government, headed by Pandit Nehru, spoke at Lahore: “If Mohammed-Bin-Kasim and Mahmood Ghaznavi could invade India with armies composed of a few thousands, and yet were able to overpower lakhs of Hindus, God willing a few lakhs of Muslims will yet overwhelm crores of Hindus.” It was he, who openly advised Hindus to embrace Islam to save themselves from the holocaust.

Dr. Ali Mohammed Naqvi : Dr. Ali Mohammed Naqvi was a follower of the Deoband School of Islamic ideology, which totally thwarted the concept of nationalism and democracy. He authored a book, Islam and Nationalism, in which he unequivocally stated: “Nationalism is incompatible with Islam... The concept of a ‘nationalist Muslim’ is as absurd as that of a ‘religious Communist’ or ‘capitalist Marxist’. ..... When the ideology of Islam expands, nationalism is destroyed, and when nationalism grows, Islam is annihilated.”

Hamid Dalwai : Hamid Dalwai, a nationlist Muslim and true son of Hindusthan, rightly reveals the attitude of fanatic Muslims in his book, Muslim Politics in India. He unambiguously states: “In sum, Muslims cannot reconcile themselves with the nationalism of any country, where they are in a minority.”

F.K. Khan Durrani : In the preface to his book. The Meaning of Pakistan, Mr. Durrani boastfully brags: “There is not an inch of the soil of India which our forefathers did not once purchase with their blood. We cannot be false to the blood of our fathers. India, the whole of it, is therefore our heritage, and it must be reconquered for Islam.... Our ultimate ideal should be the unification of India, spiritually as well as politically under the banner of Islam. The final political salvation of India is not otherwise possible.”

Attaullah Suhrawardy : Attaullah Suhrawardy, a senior leader of the National Conference of Kashmir, and former minister and deputy speaker of Kashmir, unquivocally asserted in his speech in the state legislative council: ‘I am first a Muslim and then an Indian. Islam does not need the support of anyone for its spread. It is spreading on its own. At the time of partition, there were only four and a half crore Muslims in the country. However, in spite of the bloody communal riots in Bhiwandi, Moradabad, Aligarh and other areas, killing thousands of Muslims, the population of Muslims has increased to 14 crores, .....As for the question of conversion of all to Islam, it is the fundamental duty of a Muslim to strive for conversion and any Muslim who does not remember this duty, does not deserve to be called a Muslim.”

Syed Ali Shah Geelani: Syed Ali Shah Geelani, a leader of Jama’at-i-islami categorically expresses his political ideology: “The politics of socialism and secularism is totally unsound. I do not like any Muslim to adopt socialsim and secularism as his political ideal.”

Dr. Mushir-ul-Haq : Dr. Mushir-ul-Haq honestly unfolds the inner psyche of the Muslims of India in his book, Islam in Secular India. He candidly states: “The Muslim community of India also welcomed the idea of a secular state, because they feared the alternative would be a Hindu State. Many of them seem to believe that the state must remain secular, but the Muslims should be saved from secularism.”

Syed Ahmad Hussain : Syed Ahmad Hussain, another leader of Jama’at-i-Islami addressed the Muslims in a mosque in Aurangabad on February 7, 1961: “Shall the Muslims with all their ideology merge into sweeping current of secularism or change the current itself and establish the sovreignty of Islam? That is the serious question which confronts the Mussalmans of India today. Islam has been born to turn the whole world into Islamic. We have to change this secular rule in Bharat and establish Islamic rule in its place. The idea of secular rule is itself a contradiction of Islam. We have, therefore, to slowly work for the establishment of the sovereignty of Islam here.”

Syed Shahabuddin : Syed Shahabuddin, MP, the leader of Samata Party, once expressed his venomous views: “Muslims should have ruled India after the departure of the British, and not the Hindus. Population growth helped Muslims to annex a large part of India for creating a separate Islamic State of Pakistan. Such efforts on the part of the Muslims should be continued to gradually convert the rest of India into Dar-ul-Islam (land of the Muslims).”

Syed Abdullah Bukhari : Syed Abdullah Bukahri, the Imam of Jama Masjid Delhi, poured out a poisonous statement in December 1986: “Secularism has no place in Islam. Propagation of Islam is the first duty of Muslim. Muslim youths will propagate Islam with swords in their hands.”

On another occasion in 1987, he openly uttered: “I consider Islam greater than the country. I am first a Muslim, then everything else.... For me there is no meaning to Independence Day (of India)..... I have told Muslims thousands of time and telling them again to burn down bungalows of Muslim ministers of the Congress Party, cut off their legs and throw them away. Islam is first, nation afterwards.”

Azam Khan : Azam Khan, the then MLA of UP Legislative Assembly burst into vile words against the motherland, Bharat Mata, at a public meeting in Kanpur on March 23, 1987: “Is this our motherland? This is a blood-thirsty mother. This is not mother, this is a witch.”

Salahuddin Oweisi : Salahuddin Oweisi, a member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, publicly suggested: “There should be a separate Muslim state within each state of India.”

In sharp contrast to all this, Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Sringeri, in his interview , said that Muslims are our brothers as our forefathers were common. Hence I wish them prosperity and happiness.

Now if Muslims want to prove that Jehad means peace and terrorism is against Islam, then they will have to show it in their thought and action, instead of mere statements and slogans. This will bring them world wide respect.

The Choices For Hindus

Dr Babu Suseelan

Recently I had a conversation with one of my friends on coercive religious conversion, Jihad terrorism, bogus secularism, and political corruption, "What is the point of it all?", the Friend asked. "Why should we struggle with all these issues, our life. In the end, isn't life just a sick joke." But our Santhan Dharma is eternal. It is spiritual and ever lasting. Nobody can destroy it. It will survive. I knew how he felt. He reminded me the death of our common friend. I remember watching the friend dying. For decades he was a great physician, at the heart of the family, the next he was a gray emasculated shape in bed suffering from amnesia, Alzheimer's disease, hardly able to smile, speak or remember. . After that nothing____a pile of ashes in an urn. Could this be all there was to it?

For some there is no point. We are all accidents in the evolutionary chain. We can lie back and enjoy it, or we can occupy ourselves as creative men do, in trying to understand more about what is going on. There is nothing we can do to alter it, even when we understand it. We can only play with it. Man is the smallest piece of dust in the universe.

It is God in our human soul. God is the architect of the universe, who makes sense who we are. How do we know that? Because of the moral force within us. Even if scientists explore man and the world, there will be some life questions will remain unanswered. The problem of life remain untouched. Our life has meaning, even if we were not able to describe it or define it. Even if it is a conceit, we feel that we know that we have a soul, that we matter, and that we are in some small way unique. Even if our life is short and unpredictable, we must keep on living. If we don't believe in our purpose, there is no reason to do anything, believe anything, change anything. The world would be at the mercy of those who threaten us with their bad deeds. It is a risk we cannot take.

To find our purpose for doing and our being, it helps to build on our sense of continuity, a sense of connection and a sense of direction. Without our Hindu identity, connection and continuity, we may feel disoriented and rudderless. If we are not active, assertive with self-esteem, the world around us is going to be a dangerous place for Hindus. We need to understand and recognize our Dharma and our role in preserving, practicing, protecting and promoting it. We must not only preserve the gains of our Sanathan Dharma, and maintain intact those just institutions that may have been established by our great Rishies for the benefit of all those who are living and those who are to be born.
We have an obligation and responsibility as part of those who think, care about, or are in any way influenced by Hindutva, to promote it. We were not meant to stand alone. We need to belong to the larger world Hindu community. Only where there is a mutual commitment will we find people prepared to work themselves for the preservation for the good of fellow Hindus.

It is a special privilege to be born a Hindu: Francois Gautier

New York: Noted French journalist and writer Francois Gautier who has made India his home and propagation of Hinduism his cause and mission for over three decades, is currently traveling across the US to raise funds through his foundation, FACT-India, for the setting up of an Indian history museum in Pune, India.

Gautier, perhaps one of the very few Westerners to have unconditionally adopted a Hindu way of life, feels the widely prevalent distorted image of Indian history as propagated by the British, Christian missionaries, communists and the western world in general for over two centuries, has necessitated the museum to portray Hindu civilization in the right light.

In an interview with India Post during his visit to New York last week, Gautier spoke about his ambitious museum project, the many threats to Hinduism in today's world and how Hindus can gain the respect of the world.

IP: Can you tell us about the Museum of Indian History?
Gautier: I have been donated some land in Pune by a private trust where I want to build the museum to be called the Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum of Indian History.

I see in India there are no museums of Indian history worth the name. So the idea is to start from the Vedas, go on to talk about the greatness of the whole of India and the entire drama of the invasions through history, the Hindu holocaust, and then portray India of today and tomorrow.

IP: What kind of funds do you need and how long will it take to complete the museum?
Gautier: It's a huge project but definitely it will happen. It's about $40m dollars, and I don't know how long it will take -- perhaps 10-20 years, because I don't have the money right away. But I am ready to start, once I start, the donations will come and people will understand the importance of this museum.

IP: Why is it important to have such a museum?
Gautier: As a journalist and writer, when I started documenting for my book, I realized that most history books on India are based upon very old theories considered defunct or debatable such as the Aryan invasion theory, which evidence shows has never taken place.

Both British historians and later Nehruvian historians have toned down the considerable impact on Indian culture of the invasions starting from Alexander the Great to the Arabs, the Muslim invaders and the British -- that entire part of the history has been swept under the carpet. And even later, the history of India's Independence is very unfairly portrayed.
The need of the museum is very important so we can look at India's history in a very scientific manner, which is what my organization FACT India is doing.

IP: Will the museum focus only on the Hindu history of India?
Gautier: The museum will also broach upon many of India's dark periods in its history like the inquisition in Goa by the Portuguese, the Sufi persecution, the Ahmedi Muslim persecution in Bangladesh, how the Buddhist history was wiped out and how some of the early Syrian Christians of Kerala were persecuted. And of course the Hindu holocaust right from Hindu Kush (massacre of Hindus) to the current terrorist activities against them.

I want school children to come to the museum and learn of their own culture and be proud. Kids in Indian schools are learning about Shakespeare and Milton, not about their Hindu or Indian culture. In my country we are taught about great French people like our poets, social reformers, artists etc… so I grew up proud of my culture, but Indian kids do not grow up learning about or feeling proud of their culture.

IP: Do you see any kind of opposition to your project from either the government or any section of the Indian society?
Gautier: Of course there's bound to be some opposition, you can't make everybody happy. But one has to go by the truth. Whatever one's limitations, if backed by truth, even if it is opposed, there will be some kind of direction and protection.

In fact, there are three reasons for setting up the museum in Pune: One-- of course the land donated is in Pune; second-- since I work in Pune, I found that people of Pune, irrespective of their political affiliations, are quite nationalistic in nature. I feel my museum will be more protected in Pune than anywhere else in India; thirdly-- Pune is Shivaji's birth place. There is no museum of Shivaji anywhere in Maharashtra though he is a true hero. So naming it after Shivaji will be a protection for this museum.

IP: Over the many years of your career, how successful have you been in changing western perceptions of Hinduism?
Gautier: It's a very difficult task, because unfortunately the image of Hinduism is not that good. But, there is more ignorance than hostility. Westerners do not know that it is a monotheistic religion. Secondly, Hindus, especially Brahmins have been at the receiving end of many like the British, the missionaries, the Islamic invaders all of who created a very negative image of Hinduism -- particularly the missionaries emphasized only the negative sides of Hinduism and amplified them a thousand times. Today we still find that even after 200 years, these negative images have survived even in the minds of Hindus in India.

Unfortunately it is a great handicap for journalists like me who like Hinduism and want to defend it. I can't say I have been very successful, but at least now westerners are open to going to India and understanding Hindus.

There are so many good things to be said for Hinduism, but unfortunately there is no will among Hindus to try to explain to westerners. Hindus are just content to come to the West and melt into local cultures or at best keep their spirituality and religion to themselves.

IP: What do you think of the role of the Indian intellectual elite and media in projecting the image of Hindus?
Gautier: The British have left such a mark on the minds of much of Indian intelligentsia and elite, right from the erstwhile Maharajas who have copied the British way of life that it has left a deep impression on generations after that. Today Indians think that everything that comes from the West is good. It's very stupid, because many things in the West have failed like family values etc.

This generation of Indian intelligentsia is aping Marxism so brilliantly, which is dead even in Russia, and is probably only left in Cuba, but I don't see why Indians should copy Cuba (laughs).

Look at the Chinese, they are so proud of their culture; nobody dares to fiddle with them, even America will not dare to interfere with their affairs.

IP: Many Hindus fear the very survival of Hinduism in the face of Islamic fundamentalism. How real are their fears?
Gautier: The fear is very real. I see there are five or six enemies that may be covertly or overtly attacking Hinduism. In the past there was any one threat at a time like the Greek, British or Muslim invasions. But today, there are the threats of Muslim fundamentalism, Christian conversions, Marxist onslaught, Westernization and so on which are eroding the Indian culture all at the same time. However, there are many great gurus today like Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and others who are repackaging the Hindu tenets like spirituality. pranayama, yoga, ayurveda etc for everyone's easy consumption while not associating them with Hinduism. Though I do not agree with that, it's an important movement today and helping to preserve that culture.

It's true that Hinduism is under attack and it looks frightening at times. That's why the museum is so important.

IP: Have you ever felt conflicted about the culture you were born into and the one you adopted?
Gautier: Personally I have never felt conflicted, but people of my country often do not understand why I defend the Hindus-- that has been a bit of a problem. Though my country is sympathetic to India, when you touch the intellectual layer - people who are fed on the Nehruvian history and the downgrading of Hindu culture, I have come into conflict sometimes with these people. But for me living in India is a protection; people often appreciate the work I do. Some of my friends do not understand why I poke the dangerous Islamic fundamentalism by defending Hindus. I started speaking about it (Islamic fundamentalism) 20-25 years ago when it was not at all politically correct to speak about it. Even those friends who like me sometimes do not really understand me. I have faced a lot of hostility also.

IP: What can Hindus living in America do to preserve their culture?
Gautier: For Hindus living in the US, whether fist or second generation, it is important that they carry their Hinduness. It is a special privilege to be born a Hindu, because you inherit the knowledge which is very ancient and very practical. Also the many Hindu groups which are scattered should unite to become a lobby like the Jews. They should teach their children to be proud of being Hindu while being faithful to their Americanness. They should create a lobby in the US to be able to influence South Asia policy at the administration level and see that it does not cap India's nuclear policy.

IP: Is there something that really frustrates you?
Gautier: Hindus don't think big. Most Hindu movements in the US have mostly people without a vision, they don't unite; it's very frustrating. When I last visited the US in 2002, the Hindu community was more vibrant, today I find many of the Hindu leaders of that time burnt out or taken a back seat or gone back into mainstream life; that is saddening. If only Hindus knew their own power -- there are one billion in the world -- Islam is conscious of its might and its numbers; Christianity though on the decline, is conscious of its greatness in terms of technology and power. Hindus, who are not all that small in number, have to use more muscle. Meekness and submissiveness will not take them far, they have to show muscle power. That's the way to get respect in the world.

Hindus' fateful hour : Act before it is too late

Dr. Babu Suseelan

Hindus in India, especially in Kerala, Kashmir, Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh are heading for disaster. Jihadi terrorism, coercive religious conversion, economic deprivation, cultural pollution, phony secularism and powerlessness and a feeling of hopelessness—these are only few in the complex web of problems confronting Hindus. In Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and West Bengal the anti Hindu governments are extorting billions of rupees-worth of Hindu wealth. Because its total onslaught on Hindus, these anti-Hindu governments wrought complete havoc on Hindu culture and halted/or retrogressed the onward march of Hindu civilization.

For several years, western intelligence agencies and missionaries have been financing, directing and managing the Dravidian movement in Tamil Nadu. Their goal is to destroy Hindu culture and the Indian political-economic-social-spiritual and educational values and to erase the memory of Hindu culture from the annals of Indian history. Western subversive agents in the guise of academicians and religious leaders as well as psychological warfare experts use planned communication techniques to influence Tamil people’s attitude and behavior-to create target groups behavior, emotions and attitudes that support the attainment of devious objective-the creation of a separate Tamil Elam. The form of communication they use to spread disinformation covertly and overtly by word of mouth or through any means of multimedia is against Hindus and to balkanize India.

In Tamil Nadu, under the anti Hindu DMK government, missionaries with foreign support disseminate anti-Hindu information by face-to-face communication, audio-visual means (TV) audio-media (Radio), visual media (leaflets) and/or posters. The weapon is not how it is sent, but the message it carries and how the message affects the minds of Tamil Hindus. The ultimate objective is to convert Hindus and force them to take actions against Hindu value system and to establish a separate Tamil nation favorable to Christians.

In Andhra Pradesh, the Seventh Day Adventist Missionary leader Samuel R. Reddy, the Chief Minister is heading A-team for intellectual/political/cultural subversion in the state. Their hidden and ulterior goal is to reduce the moral efficiency within Hindu organizations, promote confusion, chaos and create social crisis among Hindus. The Seventh Day Adventist movement is closely associated with foreign intelligence agencies to destabilize India and to convert Hindus. The Seventh Day Adventist leader and Chief Minister Samuel R. Reddy is promoting mass dissension and defections in Hindu Temple society and intimidate its leaders in order to loot temple wealth including precious jewelry worth billions of rupees from the Thirumala Thirupathy Sri Venkateswara Temple, the richest in the world.

What is going on? We know converted Muslims and Christians, the Marxist party, and the bogus secular anti Hindu Congress party headed by the Italian Catholic Sonia is betraying Hindus and India. They behave like a social virus in the body of Hindus. They infect collective consciousness and mutate producing complex illnessess and social decay. When measured by the standard of present political realities, general Hindu attitude and amused indifference seems suicidal.

Hindus are paying heavily for the failure to perceive and deal with these life threatening problems. The severity and interrelatedness of these problems that singly and in combination threaten Hindu existence, culture, spiritual tradition and the future. Compounding the difficulty is that certain problems are such magnitude and that they are no longer solvable unless Hindus are united, become politically active and assertive using all available means including positive violence. Indeed, the Hindu tendency towards indifference and apathy-a propensity most clearly in evidence in their refusal to react vehemently against Jihadi terrorism, deceptive religious conversion, Hajj subsidy for Muslims to visit Saudi Arabia and to participate in animal slaughter and the takeover of Hindu temples. This deadly indifference is due to obsequious sycophancy.

Hindus have defined themselves as pacifists and secularists. How we interpret our history of brutal Islamic invasion, Christian colonialism, oppression, subjugation, Jihadi terrorism, Christian conversion and political exploitation by the bogus secularists-deeply affects how we understand modern conflicts and social crisis created by the dark hands. If we accept passivism, and practice tolerance of intolerance, when there is no reason to be believed it is beneficial, it is just credulous. And if Hindus will not reject something when there is no reason to believe in it, we are escaping from freedom to slavery. This way of thinking is completely deadly, or put it another way, don’t be so open-minded that we may fall into a deep it. A quote from Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s (noble prize winner for literature) acceptance speech in 1970 amplifies the deadly danger of passivity. “There are many people in today’s world elect passivity and retreat, just so as their accustomed life might drag on a bit longer, just so as not to step over the threshold of hardship today and tomorrow, you ‘all see, it will be all right. (But it will never be alright). The price of cowardice will only be evil; we shall reap courage and victory only when we dare to make sacrifices”.

Hindus are unaware of the ulterior motives of missionaries and the workings of Muslim and Christian politics as well as the evil designs and criminal thinking of phony secular politicians. They simply do not know that in the national and international arena, decisions are influenced by the forcefulness with which demands are made. For Hindus, weakness is psychological. What is needed is strengthen the will, free them from submissiveness and march ahead with a fighting spirit. Inspiring slogans must be impressed on the national consciousness so as to rouse the people to the bold deeds that would make history.

The best hope for Hindus for the future is a radical social revolution from which Hindus can gain a fresh understanding of our past, present and future and their role in the scheme of things. If Hindus can free themselves from the psychological and political chain created by bogus secularists, Muslim mafia and the missionary mischief mongers—and unite, they can contribute-no matter, to the good of Hindus and for our motherland in these troubled times.

Adequate Hindu response to the threats and challenges at this decisive turn in our history must not be delayed much longer. The danger that current crisis may become much graver is very real. It is absolutely unjustifiable to neglect any longer the immense opportunities Hindus have as a consequence of Hindu awareness created by organizations such as RSS, VHP and Bjarang Dal. Hindu leaders and laymen must prompt that awakening to do more before it is too late.

Hindus need a bold will. A bold will can shatter the fetters of circumstances and overcome all obstacles. The strength of collective will can overcome all obstacles. Proud Hindus with self-esteem can rebel against current crisis and determine their own destiny. We need to act before it is too late.

10,000 Africans embrace Hindu Dharma in Ghana

Smruthi Gargi Eswar

AS AN Indian in Ghana, I soon became aware of the country’s Indian community. It was while working on a photo-essay about crosscultural interactions, especially interracial marriages, that I learnt of the African Hindu Monastery. Now, Ghana is by no means homogenous when it comes to religion. Though predominantly Christian, with Islam being prominent in the north, most Ghanaians still maintain their connections to older traditions of ancestor worship and belief in the spirit world. Hinduism, though, is a foreign and recent entrant, associated with the Sindhi business families who dominate the immigrant Indian population. The presence of an African Hindu community, therefore, came as a surprise. I decided to go and see the place for myself.

The African Hindu Monastery (AHM) is a simple white structure in Odorkor, a suburb of the Ghanaian capital city of Accra. Started in 1975, it is headed by Swami Ghanananda Saraswati. The gentle-voiced Saraswati was born into the traditional African faith. Although he converted to Christianity when both his parents became Christian priests, he continued his search for truth. Attracted by Hindu beliefs and the practice of yoga, he travelled to India. While staying at Swami Sivananda’s ashram in Rishikesh, he decided to embrace Hinduism. At 35, he returned to Ghana and acquired his first disciples, holding lectures to educate Ghanaians about this ancient and foreign religion. Initially, his teachings attracted the literate and the academic – university lecturers and lawyers. Soon, some Indian families started to come. Later, a meeting with one Swami Krish- nananda (who was visiting from India) inspired him to set up a monastery “where he could tell people about all that he had learnt in India”.

TODAY, GHANA’S population of 23 million includes 12,500 Hindus, of which 10,000, like their Swami Ghanananda Saraswati, are indigenous Africans. While an older Sindhi temple still exists in Accra (and the Sathya Sais, the Ananda Margis, ISKCON and the Brahma Kumaris are also active), the African Hindu Monastery (AHM) is now Ghana’s largest centre of Hindu worship.
Ghana now has a Hindu population of 12,500, of which as many as 10,000 are indigenous Africans

The AHM’s iconography and practices provide clues to its hybrid origins. Its nonexclusionist attitude is apparent from the picture of Jesus alongside the Hindu gods on the main mantelpiece, as well as images of spiritual leaders from other religions. There are even images of secular leaders from India. The monastery’s members also believe that the Supreme God is known by other names, such as Yahweh and Allah.

While it identifies itself with Vedic philosophy, with Vishnu as the primary deity, there is an adjoining temple for Shiva. In fact, the day starts with a Shiva Abhishek, followed by an aarti, conducted by the Swami or one of his disciples. This is followed by a havan (fire sacrifice) and the reciting of the Hanuman Chalisa. In contrast to the specially commissioned havans in most Indian temples, all those present can pour a spoonful of oil into the sacred fire. Bhajans in Hindi — sung exquisitely in a Ghanaian accent — might follow. Later, a Vedic text might be discussed, either in English or in a Ghanaian dialect.

The AHM is not just accommodating of multiple religious traditions but also open to people of all races, classes and communities. Indian worshippers are not only members of the dominant Sindhi community, but also recent immigrants: managers and contract labour alike. But most worshippers are Africans, again from different professions and backgrounds. When I asked a disciple about the group’s opinion of the caste system, he pointed out that there is no society in the world that does not break its people up into the privileged and the unprivileged, be it through profession, ancestry or race. Ghanaian Hindus like him, however, are clear that people have an equal right to education, the means to a good life and most importantly, religion.
Some have given their children Hindu names like Rama or Krishna after a naming ceremony

CONTRARY TO its name, the monastery has only one monk. Saraswati explains, “Hinduism is a new thing [in West Africa], and I do not want to make somebody a monk who later on abandons monkhood. It would bring a bad name to me and to Hinduism.” Believers who want to become disciples enroll in a six-week residential course, after which they are initiated. The transition to Hinduism is a gradual one. For instance, an African Hindu would continue to have a Christian or Muslim first name and a traditional African last name – for example, Daniele Otchere. But there are disciples who have given their children Hindu first names like Rama or Krishna after a Hindu naming ceremony. Hindu rituals at marriage and cremation (rather than burial) at death are also beginning to be adopted, though not obligatory.

The monastery likes disciples to pray and perform pujas at home. In fact, the performance of rituals is seen as essential to being Hindu. Sometimes, new believers’ desire to perform Hindu-ness is so great that it feels like they are play-acting – like the time when several people fell at the feet of a visiting dignitary to show respect ‘in the traditional Hindu manner’. But then, ritual is often the embodied route to faith.

(As told to Trisha Gupta)
